Workshop and special issue on design margins
Margins are everywhere, every aspect of a product that is not completely optimised to a specific application has margins. Margins are sometimes also known as overspecification or excess. They are important because they can absorb the effects of change propagation and allow for design modifications that would otherwise be physically or economically unviable, however can also incur significant additional manufacturing or life cycle cost. Yet margins are rarely formally discussed or documented in many design activities.
