Winter school: Geometry of nonequilibrium critical phenomena

The course material is based on lectures held at the winter school on the Geometry of Nonequilibrium Critical Phenomena, which took place at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, from 22 to 27 February 2026. The content cotains cutting-edge theoretical and experimental advances in nonequilibrium phenomena in quantum materials and statistical physics. As such it builds an advanced course in condensed matter physics, primarily designed for PhD students, advanced Master students, Postdocs, and interested researchers.  

Scope: High-intensity light sources—ranging from terahertz to X-ray frequencies—enable precise control and probing of materials on subpicosecond timescales. This capability has positioned ultrafast dynamics at the forefront of modern physics, unlocking new opportunities to explore nonequilibrium processes, phase transitions, and metastable states of matter. Simultaneously, the study of pattern formation and dynamics in active and living matter has transformed the research landscape over the past two decades, offering promising applications in biotechnology and the life sciences. To bridge these two exciting yet distinct fields and inspire innovative ideas at their intersection, we organized a winter school that integrates advances and methodologies from both areas.
